The tale of Pwyll Prince of Dyfed is the first branch of the Mabinogion. The story begins when Pwyll meets the mysterious Arawn, a king of the otherworld. After spending a year in the otherworld, Pwyll defeats Arawn’s enemy for him and returns triumphantly to Dyfed. In the second part of the story, Pwyll chases after Rhiannon, a beautiful woman from the otherworld. After many a slip, she finally allows him to win her as his wife. The final part of the tale is about their magical child, Pryderi, who disappears soon after birth. Rhiannon is falsely accused of killing him, and is only released from her penance years later when the child is found in the care of a neighbouring chieftain.
